The Alternative Berlin – Kreuzberg & Friedrichshain | Bike Tours
Duration and Length: 3½ hours and 10-13 km tour (as a starting point – can be adapted to your preferences)
This tour is designed to see and get a feel for Berlin’s hip and alternative areas in Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. Join us to see how the borderland of the Berlin Wall has fostered a continuously active alternative cultural scene and how areas around the railway and industry have been used to develop subcultures, as well as a competing business landscape.
We’ll explore areas where young creative types and squatters meet Turkish immigrants and people coming to party on the weekends. This tour is generally more about seeing and sampling impressions from the exciting corners of Berlin that many tourists often overlook, rather than focusing on historical facts.
- Understand how the borderland between old East and West in Kreuzberg has evolved.
- See and hear about the peculiar wooden house on the Berlin Wall.
- Get the chance to experience the famous outdoor “East Side Gallery.”
- Go in search of Berlin’s legendary nightclubs like Berghain.
- Gain insight into how old industrial areas have transformed into an alternative culture and graffiti scene at RAW-Gelände.
- Cycle along the Osfhafen waterfront by the Spree River.
- Get a picture of your group on the beautiful Oberbaumbrücke.
- Hear all about Berlin’s most controversial alternative park, “Görli” (Görlitzer Park).
- Feel and taste the sweet life along the Landwehrkanal.
- Sample Berlin’s best dates or figs at the authentic Turkish market (Tuesdays and Fridays).
- Enjoy the view along Berlin’s prettiest street, “Planufer,” by the canal.
- Learn why the Berlin Senate had Lonely Planet remove any reference to the legendary Admiralbrücke.
- Experience the Turkish Little Istanbul in Berlin at Kottbusser Tor.
Along the way, we can talk about everything from life in divided Berlin, subcultures, to Berlin’s history, or whatever falls within your areas of interest. Come and explore colorful Berlin!
