Berlin’s Highlights Walking Tour
Duration and Length: 3 Hours and approximately 4 km (as a starting point)
EXPERIENCE BERLIN’S SIGHTS WITH A GUIDED WALK
I once read that if you truly want to see a city and its people, the best way is to get down to eye level and explore on foot. My carefully designed walking tours through central Berlin are a fantastic way to see all of Berlin’s major landmarks while allowing us to talk about the city, its culture, people, and history as we walk.
GET UP CLOSE TO BERLIN’S MOST POPULAR HIGHLIGHTS
The tour can, of course, be adapted to your interests and preferences for duration and distance, but as a starting point, you will see the following on the tour:
- The Berlin Wall. (I recommend we start just outside the Nordbahnhof S-Bahn station to cover the Berlin Wall and then take a quick 5-minute S-Bahn ride to the Brandenburg Gate together.)
- Brandenburg Gate – feel the historical significance and understand the gate’s shifting symbolism.
- Reichstag – hear how the Nazis cynically used the building to eliminate their political rivals, the Communists, and dismantle German democracy.
- The old Nazi government quarter, Hitler’s Führerbunker, and the Holocaust Memorial.
- From here, we can take a break from walking and experience the brand-new U5 subway line from Brandenburg Gate to Unter den Linden.
- Walk along the Prussian Royal Boulevard, Unter den Linden, and hear about Frederick the Great’s immense legacy.
- The Book Burning Memorial at Bebelplatz.
- The old royal quarter and the Royal Palace (Humboldt Forum).
- The neoclassical buildings on Museum Island, Berlin’s answer to the Louvre.
- Get close to the TV Tower (Fernsehturm) at Alexanderplatz and gain insight into the Communists’ vision for Berlin.
- See Nikolaiviertel, with Berlin’s oldest building (the medieval town).
FOR HISTORY LOVERS AND FIRST-TIME VISITORS TO BERLIN
Along the way, we’ll talk about everything from Prussia’s rise to the imperial era, the impact of National Socialism, the city’s division during the Cold War, and finally, the reunification and revitalization of modern Berlin.
