Tracing the Berlin Wall and Third Reich | Bike Tour
Duration & length : 3½ hours and 10-13 km tour (as a baseline – can be adjusted to your wishes)
This tour is designed to explore the Berlin Wall and its history, as well as to visit the hidden sights of the Third Reich. The tour takes place at a relaxed pace, making it accessible to all. A bicycle is the perfect means of transport to explore Berlin and especially the Berlin Wall, as it offers a better spatial understanding of the Wall’s path and allows for the discovery of scattered and hidden Nazi remnants. The tour can easily be adapted according to your interests and preferences for duration and distance, but as a base, you can expect to see and hear about the following:
- Experience the Berlin Wall from multiple perspectives. We follow the so-called “Berliner Mauerweg” as closely as possible to give you a sense of its route. It’s also a relatively green route, showing a different side of Berlin.
- The large outdoor museum and Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Straße.
- Hear about the many escape attempts and heartbreaking stories of the Wall’s victims.
- Mauerpark – from no-man’s-land to recreational space.
- Humboldthain Bunker, where you can hear and see how Berlin defended itself from air raids during World War II.
- See the last command tower from the Berlin Wall – today the Gunther Litfin Memorial – dedicated to the first person shot at the Wall.
- Invalidenhof – hear stories about the most notorious Nazi leaders and see their graves.
- Humboldthafen – see the modern developments along the canal where the Wall once stood, near the new Europacity.
- Government Quarter – hear about and see the political reunification of East and West Germany.
- Reichstag – learn how the Nazis cynically orchestrated the burning of the parliament building to dismantle Germany’s democracy.
- Tiergarten – experience Berlin’s green oasis and the remaining visual legacies of the Nazis.
- Brandenburg Gate – feel the historical significance and understand the gate’s changing symbolic meaning.
- Holocaust Memorial – see and learn about the controversial memorial and Jewish history in Berlin.
- Führerbunker – see Hitler’s burial site and hear why it was kept secret.
- Potsdamer Platz – from Berlin’s most vibrant neighborhood to no-man’s-land and modern Berlin.
- Discover what remains of the Nazi government quarter around Wilhelmstraße, where Göring’s Ministry of Aviation still stands today.
- Get an impression of the Cold War’s iconic border crossing at Checkpoint Charlie and learn about American influence in Berlin.
- See where the Berlin Wall fell and hear the stories and myths about the strange events of the pivotal days in 1989. Perhaps not everything was as it seemed.
Along the way, we’ll discuss everything from the Wall’s construction and fall, Berlin during the Cold War, to the reunification and modernization of today’s Berlin. Join us on this fascinating journey through Berlin’s history!
